Sri Lanka excavates mass grave

Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities are in an investigation process regarding the excavation of a mass grave which found at the northern area of the Island nation. This area was once under the control of the extremists. As per reports, the excavation work in the mass grave at Mannar was carried out in presence of the authorities.

Inside the grave, 10 human skeletal remains were found buried. Following the incident, authorities were ordered for investigations and forensic examinations. According to the police sources, the grave would have used by rebels during the ethnic war to bury victims caught and killed by them. All the northern parts of Sri Lanka including Mannar were under the control of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ezam (LTTE) for the last thirty years until the Sri Lankan army could defeat them in the year 2009.

Last year another mass grave was found at Matale in Central Sri Lanka. More than 150 skeletal remains and human bones were dug-out from this mass grave. According to the Forensic department, the remains were of those killed sometime in the late 1980s.
