Colombo: 25 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly entering into the country’s sea-water sector.
Naval spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that 25 fishermen were arrested near the Delft Island in Jaffna during the last hours of day. Their six fishing boats were also captured by them.
The fishermen were to be handed over to the Kankesanturai harbor police.
Following the arrests there were talks between Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Sri Lankan Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Rajitha Senaratne. They have discussed the problematic issues of Indian fishermen.
Then both the countries have decided to free all fishermen in their custody and release their vessels.
These arrests were ahead of a meeting scheduled for January 27 between committees organized to work out as a joint venture.
