In times of war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and saves a little girl, bringing an irreversible change to the lives of the couple and those whose paths the child crosses. This is the first animated film by Michel Hazanavicius. It is the best premiere of 2024 that I have seen this year so far, and we are in mid-December 2024. It tells a story that takes place in Poland during World War II, almost like a popular story. Most of the plot takes place in the forest, so typical of the aforementioned popular stories, revolving around a couple of woodcutters adopting a Jewish girl who was thrown out of a deportation train that cuts through their forest. She was thrown out by her father to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I will not go into further details of the plot, so that you can see them for yourself, I just want to add that the film reaches a deeply philosophical ending. From a technical point of view, everything is also done perfectly. The visual effects of the film are brilliantly done. The drawing style is just right, not too detailed or too rough, mostly showing scenes in low light with dominant shades of gray, thus emphasizing the horrors of the most infamous war and mass extermination in human history. And then the soundtrack, which is sublime: music, sound effects, narration and dubbing (I saw the original version in French), all completely appropriate to present this gem of a film. In conclusion, it is one of the best films dealing with racism and in particular the Shoah, thanks to its artistic procedure and the story it wants to tell.
