United Nations: India has revealed that it would seek re-election to the UN’s human rights council this year and continue pushing for an early reformation of the powerful Security Council.
On the occasion of the 65th Republic Day Indian Ambassador to the UN, Asoke Kumar Mukerji said that in the coming year, India would dynamically take part in the works of the United Nations with respect to its national interests as well as priorities.
He said that the early reorganization of the UN Security Council would continue to be a “priority” for India for the maintenance of international peace and security. This is also essential for the existence of external environments for the developmental objectives of India.
India is currently one of the 47 members of the UN Human Rights Council and its term will be ending on December 31, 2014. Hence, it would seek a re-election to be held in October this year.
In the UN election, India will be competing in the Asia—Pacific category in which there are four seats. So far seven nations have announced their candidature for the contest.
