Baghdad: A top officer of the US military is reported to have landed in Baghdad where Iraqi forces have launched a fierce fighting against the ISIS militants.
The ongoing battle is considered to be the largest operation till date against the Jihadists.
General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff is reported to have flown in on a C-17 military transport aircraft.
During the visit he is expected to hold talks with top Iraqi officials.
Dempsey who visited the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle which is currently in the Gulf, was appealed for “strategic patience” in the fight against ISIS.
He said that the training of Iraqi troops and the willingness of the Baghdad government to harmonize with the Sunni population in the country as well as leaders were the key factors.
The US had launched its first strikes against the Jihadists in Iraq in August last year.
According to Dempsey, the process of intensifying air-strikes was not an option.
He has also pointed out that the Carpet bombing through Iraq was not the answer.
Last year, France had also carried out air-strikes in Iraq and thus became the second Western nation to carry out strikes in the country.
According to him there is no need to deploy more military advisers than the currently existing 2,600 members in Iraq.
As per the earlier reports Washington’s aim to install a new air base in Iraq’s Kurdistan may be confirmed as the base can be used in a campaign against Islamic State (ISIS).
According to sources this base can be used in future as a logistics hub to supply arms for warplanes of the US-led coalition against ISIS militants.
