Gudi Padwa celebrated in India on March 31st


Mumbai: The Maharashtra state in India has recently celebrated the New Year as ‘Gudi Padwa’. This year the celebrations were on 31st March. Usually it is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar. This day is also known as Kalash Sthapana . The most important celebration of this auspicious day is is the hoisting of flags on a bamboo stick. A bright green or yellow cloth adorned with fabric is tied to the tip of a long bamboo over which a sweet material, Neem leaves, a twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers are tied. This is then elevated by placing a silver or copper pot placed in the inverted position over it. The village ladies clean their house and platter it from the cow dung mixed with mud. Ladies and girls of the village make beautiful designs with special powder of soft, white stone are drawn on the floor in front of it.
