Indian Army's first ice band is in action


Drass: Nowadays, Drass in Kargil district is witnessing a unique 10-member Army band that performs while marching and skating on ice.
Located close to the battalion headquarters of 10 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI) is the ice hockey ground where youngsters from the town often gather to play their favorite local sport.
In the midst of one such game last year, the idea of forming the ‘ice’ band had crossed the mind of three army men from the regiment. When these enthusiastic men expressed their wish to their senior officers, they were appreciated and instantly encouraged.
With the enormous support from their officials, they could arrange some practice sessions during last year itself. From January 15, 2014 on-wards they started practicing regularly. This enabled them to secure tremendous confidence to play the military band as a team.
As a result of this, a band team was officially organized with the back-up of all required modern equipments. Now, they have experienced well to perform the band while marching and skating on the ice.
