Thiruvananthapuram: Sri Lanka will be opening their honorary consulate in Thiruvananthapuram. Regarding this matter, A. Jayaprakash, adviser to the Honorary Counsel Joemon Joseph said that this new beginning would boost businesses between the two coastal areas. Tourism is one of the key business that gets a major boost both in Kerala and Sri Lanka. People belonging to both these places undertake travels up and down as part of their tourism program. Jayaprakash has also pointed out the benefit available to the business community in the two locations as there would be more trade and business activities. It is hoped that the new step would do a great deal in boosting the coconut business in Kerala where coconut is an important cash crop. Moreover, there are companies in Sri Lanka, interested in doing business with the coconut kernel.
However, one major point to be analysed is the developments of trade and commerce in the two countries following the opening of the consulate at Thiruvananthapuram. Currently, there are two Sri Lankan consulates in India functioning at Chennai and Mumbai in addition to the two honorary consulates in Bangalore and Kolkata.
