Cultivation is possible in Mars

The Hague: It is found that cultivation of plant varieties including food plants is possible on the soil of Mars. This was proposed by the ecologist Wieger Wamelink of the Dutch research institute at Alterra of Wageningen University.

To investigate whether it is possible to grow plants in the soil of Mars and also on moon, the  researchers have undertaken experiments with 14 plant species on artificial Martian and lunar soils, arranged by NASA. They conducted experiments regarding this for about 50 days.

The outcome of the research was absolutely surprising. Some species such as rye and cress were already sprouted within 24 hours. Eventually plants on Mars soil had tendencies even for blossoming. According to the researchers, it was so exciting to watch Tomato plants growing and carrot plants producing small carrots.

However, the experiments with lunar soil did not prove much favorable. There the germination as well as the growth of all plant species were much worse. Many germinated plants were died before completing the experiments on moon soil.
