The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living carrying out murders for the highest fee. He soon meets his worthy rival in a tenacious British intelligence officer who tracks him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. The novel “The Day of the Jackal” is set in 1963 and concerns an assassination attempt on the then President of France Charles de Gaulle.
Referenced in Graham Norton The Gossips: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). This would have been a great cat-and-mouse chase if the female lead had been anyone else, literally anyone else. The way he portrays the detective makes the viewer, at least that much, not want to root for her.
Yes, she is with the police and what she does is right, but how she does it is horrible! I don’t like her, nor do I care for her. Because of this, I have a feeling that many of us who watch the show will root for the Jackal.
He is everything she is not, even though he is a murderer. I don’t want her to succeed in her mission and I don’t want the Jackal to be caught. I don’t think that’s how it should be, but that’s how I feel.
Unfortunately, if she succeeds, it will make me want to stop watching this show. And that’s a shame, because he is incredible at that!
