Yercaud is a marvelous picturesque hill station in south India which belongs to Salem district in Tamil Nadu. This naturally blessed sightseeing location is popularly known as ‘Ooty of the poor’. Yercaud is a calm and beautiful place, absolutely suitable to get refreshed with its spectacular sceneries, watercourses, crystal clear water lake etc. It is really eye-catching to view the misty mountain ranges which encircle the region. This elevated area is spread across the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats. The name ‘Yercaud’ is said to have derived from the spectacular water lake located amid dense forest. In Tamil, the word ‘Yeri’ means lake and the meaning of ‘Kaadu’ is forest.
Yercaud was discovered by the British in 19th century and nowadays this enchanting location has been attracting by a number of tourists. When compared to other main tourist locations in the country, the cost of living in Yercaud is very low. The hill station is located at a height of 1,515 meters above sea level and covers an area of 382.67 square kilometers, comprising of Reserve Forest. Since the climate here is very much similar to that of Ooty, the best time to visit the place is during summer. The cool and chill greeneries among the landscape area are popular for oranges, black pepper and coffee plantations. Other wholesome fruits available here are Jack fruit and guava. The entire area is being declared as a town ship and administered by a village council.
