Kabani river in Wayanad is one of the three east direction flowing rivers in Kerala. The crystal clear serene watercourse is an important tributary of river Cauvery which in turn merges with the Bay of Bengal at the east. River Kabani and its tributaries constitute a powerful river system in the spectacular landscape of Wayanad. Panamaram rivulet which takes its origin from the perennial ‘Pookode lake’ flows swiftly through gorgeous mountains. The same with other tributary streams and runs down into Panamaram valley making the region absolutely enchanting. About six kilometres away from Panamaram, this river joins with the Mananthavady watercourse, originating from the lower regions of ‘Thondarmudi’ peak. From this confluence onwards, the river becomes as the popularly known Kabani, the mighty, perennial river which joins with the river Cauvery from Karnataka State. Almost the entire Wayanad is blessed by the Kabani river and its tributaries, namely, Panamaram river, Mananthavady river and Thirunelli river. The famous tourist spot ‘Kuruva islands’ are said to have formed from the deltas of Kabani River.
